Just curious about how many ppl here are roleplayer and such. i´d be happy, if you write down your opinions on the answers you chose or points i missed...

btw, we need a RP subforum, a meet and greet place at least for roleplayers or those who are curious :D

ya for years my friends and I would mix MW with the TT. Build a merc unit from the ground up that way. still have the 3 ring binder with all the mechs and characters in it. good times.

I have almost always had a 'characters' and 'mechs' type setup when I play or run anything Battletech even most of the tournaments I have played in were set up with characters and had grudge matches and such. More often than not I do not use the MWRPG systems beyond the random background generators, which were awesome. I have used GURPS, SPYCRAFT, D20 Modern/Future, and even some fairly simple home brewed systems to make characters. The only link between the RPG system mechanics and Battletech System mechanics are the Pilots 3-4 attributes and a name, so it is fairly easy to match up any system players are already familiar with.

As it happens I am trying to get a group of players who are interested in seeing a RP capable campaign style fan site set up for MWT, if there are enough people with some interest we can easily set up threads, forums, wikies, all sorts of stuff, for keeping track of the character side of things while MWT (and links to battle videos) provide the Mech side of things.

I wouldn't say I am a role player, but I think they should at least get their own chat channel or something. If they want to get into character, more power to them. Same should go for the theorycrafters like me. Its not everyone that likes to discuss statistics and spreadsheets. :)

I enjoy RP, but I don't usually start it. So if there's somewhere folks are getting into a setting (say if we wind up with campaigns or Solaris VII), I could see joining in the fun.

I love the battletech fiction, but I am not a roleplayer in PVP games. It never really intrigued me. I dont mind if others have it and try to do it. In games like Eve online though roleplaying was an excuse to be bad at the game. I am hoping the ones here are hardcore and beat me ;)

I tend to see battletech and any other wargame RP as slightly different, there is not any one character for a player to represent, except possibly the CO of a merc outfit or house unit, but even then the important is the personality of the unit represented in the battle, the fighting style, and or strategic choices made during a campaign are sometimes based on this personality, but usually not restricted by it.

I used to combine MW and the TT all the time. Had a lot of fun playing the out-of-mech parts with my group.
Also played "Das Schwarze Auge" (a german fantasy RPG), AD&D and Shadowrun
After a move, I lost my group and now am reduced to do some solo-play from time to time and, of course, the computer games.

Damn, I miss the old times :)

I'm up to some RP. in fact one of the reasons I liked the Mechcommander games as much as I did. It immersed you as if you were a Tactical Operations Officer running a comprehensive inventory, communications and tactical program. Designed by the NAIS IIRC

I'm an old-school RPer. I've been rolling dice and telling stories consistently for 20 years, ever since introduced to it in high school.

At the same time, I don't necessarily like to mix my RP/fantasy with my tactics games (or board games, or card games, or whatever) so I'd probably stick to strict tactical play in MWT. I'll be happy to have the option for it, but I don't know if I'd ever use it.

Couldn't agree more with your post. I've been roleplaying on both sides of the table since the late 80's (Wargames West, anyone?) but when we sat down to play the RPG version of BattleTech, my friends and I found ourselves going through the motions to get to the tabletop tactical portion of giant robot combat. It's one of the things that broadened my appreciation of miniatures, which has only grown since the early days.

Not loving this poll. I would consider myself a long-time RPer, but work and family limit my exposure to one convention every few years. Really looking forward to some tactical MW action on my browser, especially when deployed.

My roleplaying is called 'writing'. =P As I've gotten older I've found I can't tolerate traditional roleplaying with other people anymore -- or maybe the people I try it off and on with are too structured and controlling. I have a couple friends I co-write things with; we trade stuff back and forth. I don't know if that counts as roleplaying. But I'd rather do it myself than be subject to the whims of GMs and dice.

I AM me there is no delineation between me, no character, just Amarus Cameron. I have a long and storied service that started out not so great and ended tragically magnificent. It will be somewhat frustrating that my character is not even born(birthed) yet at time of launch but I will make due =P

I do not know that I am up to play acting a character, but along those lines, I would not mind playing a scenario with realistic plans to build a merc unit from the ground up. Things like actually managing a lance, by having to pay for the damaged mechs replacement parts and negotiating contracts for a mission.

The cards you get in STACS would not be your automatic up-grades, but perhaps considered inventory that is not quite available for some reason. As you build up your money and can pay to install the next latest and greatest pieces then good for you.

I like that this game is being produced and it looks to fill a need for all TT gamers, but I have never thought combat in BT was about Rock'em Sock'em Robots 'til the last mech standing.

Especially for Merc units, they were highly valued machines, that knew when to cut their losses in a battle. Despite us all wanting to be the super hero, the reality would have been, "What's in it for me and can I make a profit, without getting my ass kicked." Remember taking the boring back water garrison duty contracts so you could make some"safe" C-Bills?

Then some one rolled the die for a random scenario and you had to deal with a local uprising and maybe a mech or two... or it got really ugly and you had to deal with a house invasion with some decent mechs and hope the pilots sucked.

That to me was role playing vs just thinking I am McMech Master, rogue pilot extraordinaire.

Not really planning on doing any RP stuff on MWT, not sure the game style will lend itself well to that, but by all means if anyone wants to give it a shot go for it.

Edit: One thing to note, though, is that according to the information we have gotten from the Devs, there will be no such thing as a "Global Chat". You can message people on your friends list, but that is it.
