If you were going to choose your map size for a match would you go with Small maps for quick and dirty matches, Doubled maps for strategic encounters, or Massive maps for epic length shoot-outs?

Post away and answer below!

Depending on how many mechs I have to play with.

Small map would be fitting for lance vs lance
Doubled for company vs company
Massive might be fun once and again.

There is an old formula fans of the tabletop game used, and I dunno if it ever made it as a soft guidline in any rule books. generally 1 mapsheet per 4 mechs between the players is sufficent size. so in a lance on lance game a 1X2 map should be sufficent.

if you are doing extremely mobile games or want a lot of freedom of movement and terrain, go no more then 2X2 unless you are going to increase player force size.

I think that we would like to see all of it.
For few vehicle, small maps are optimal, for larger scale battle, the bigger map is the better, and we need real huge maps, for full warzones. :)

Map size is entirely dependant on being able to break LOS.

If you can hide on the map then larger maps are more fair and allow more diversity of armaments.

If the maps are small then long range armaments are neutered. If the maps are large and there is no restrictions to LOS then close range armaments are neutered

I'll take the double sized maps, or bigger.

From the released videos, the current sized map looks too small to bring tactics really into play. Doubling that size (assuming that's supposed to be one tabletop map) seems to give us the right size to start with.

Yea, map size depends on a lot of things, like terrain types and number of mechs. That said, a 2X2 was always my favorite because it did not restrict movement. If not that big, then a 1X2, is a good compromise.

Would be nice if, when creating a game, the creator could decide what number of maps could be used, in what orientation and with what landscape.

I am going to be a major PITA here and say I would prefer to be able to chose between the 3;
Small maps are cool when you just want to dive in and get strait into the action, very good for the games which end up happening real time, also small is useful for a fast and dirty load out test.
Doubled maps would be cool because it then brings in elements like how much emphasis do I put on LR weapons over say MLs, playing style becomes more apparent.
Massive maps are cool because let's face it sometimes it's nice to have that epic match which has been going on for weeks with someone you generally get on with and it's just a bit of quiet fun.

If I had to make any choices then dropping Massive maps would be it because I suspect that after the launch overload they would be the first ones to see decreased use.

I generally find that two standard map sheets is a good size until you get into the really big numbers of units.

If there is a LOT of terrain that breaks LOS, then the action tends to concentrate on a single map, but I would rather have the map too big and not use all of it than too small and not have room to maneuver.

too big maps, with lots of cover and few mechs and you will play hide 'n seek instead of mechwarrior.

nevertheless, bring on 8vs8 players (each of them commandering a lance) on huuuuge maps!

I prefer massive, wherein each "role" gets a chance to shine:

-fast movers for scouting to find the enemy
-LRM boats need a massive map to work effectively
-deployment and movement of lances becomes more interesting in a massive map.

I would prefer a map large enough where a mech standing in the middle of the map cannot hit everything with LRM. In other words, even if a mech is dead center, the map should be big enough to allow manuever outside his firing bubble.

Double+ please.

1 map sheet for every 4 mechs (total) at a minimum. Otherwise long range weapons are not worth their tonnage nearly as much, and lights are not as survivable.

2x2 old style sheets gives a good playfield for lance on on up to company on company (barely)

I like double maps for Lance vs. Lance. They are big enough to give you time to scout, maneuver and even lay a trap. They're also not so big as to waste several rounds moving just to get within firing range of your enemy.

Honestly I'd like all 3, tending towards the smallest map size for random battles and the double or massive maps for battles with friends.

Alternatively, if I can choose the lance before the match, I'd love to choose the bigger maps if I've specialized my lance for speed and/or long-range firepower; if I've built a Lance around an Atlas and some Hunchies with AC/20s I'd prefer the smallest map allowed.

Small. This game is played asynchronously and I expect there won't be more than 2-3 rounds of a match played per day.
Double might be fun for occasional match against someone who is online simultaneously with me, though.
Massive has little to no point until we get to play with larger forces than a single lance.

Double by default, other options are always welcome though! :)

I agree that small doesn't seem like it would be good for being able to utilize all the tech we're given, but it does have a place for smaller skirmishes. Maybe even for a future representation of solaris matches/tourneys?
