When I *do* get to take it off mute, though, I prefer music with no lyrics (too distracting). Something driving and harsh would convey the proper mood. When you posted a similar question on Facebook a while ago I responded with Dvorak's "Mars". Still seems like an appropriate musical selection.
As for what to listen to if I were *actually* in a mech? I'm with Battalia, I would not risk drowning out things like that Lyran Scout Lance trying to sneak up behind me...

I've been on a Hives kick lately so in actuality, when I've been playing MWT, it's been Hives in the background. If I had to pick an ideal soundtrack, though, that'd take me a little while.

Though I must say, ever since spending hundreds of hours in the Fallout world, there's something very attractive about playing in a devolved technological setting like Battletech while listening to something akin to Galaxy News Radio.

When in combat it would be something aggresive. Some industrial metal type shiz.
Also Peter Gabriel! You can never go wrong with Peter Gabriel! XD

More specifically, I'd have "Slither" by Velvet Revolver playing while piloting a mech loaded with crit-seeking weapons, since the tempo requires a hail of bullets, casings falling 30 feet onto the ground below. If I'm a merc, I'd roll out the Aloe Blacc "I Need A Dollar", because I rather like the image of that booming out while my opponents... share their dollars, as it were.
Piloting something ridiculously huge and powerful, I'd play some "Funky Cold Medina" Tone Loc, to let them know how relaxed I am. Either that, or Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby Mcferrin. Hard to argue with either of those
If piloting a locust or something crazy fast, I'd play "Slow Ride". Niiiiice.
Finally, "Greatest Dancer" or "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" by Sister Sledge and Indeep respectively, jumping about and laying down some melee.
Of course, all fo it gets blasted out of some massive speakers. 4 crit slots in the centre torso big. Major sound system to broadcast my style.

As a MechWarrior, I'd have my 'mix tape' of goodies and classics such as:
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
Paint it Black - The Rolling Stones
California Dreamin - Mamas & The Papas
Ride of the Valkyries - Wagner
Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven
Violin Concertos of Tchaikovsky, Mozart, and Brahm
Ave Maria - Schubert
'Rejoice, for your annihilation will be to the metronomic paces of my Fafnir in 4/4 time.'
*****
Edited to include my favorite guilty pleasure, the Foo Fighters (and their earlier works).

I don't listen to music while I play games and generally turn off any in game music.

You're taking on the role of a commander ordering his troops on the field; it would be weird to have heavy metal music blaring in the background.
More importantly though, I'd definitely want a lot of environmental sounds and ambiance -- the world should feel alive. That's much more crucial than any specific type of background music.
However, if I was piloting a 'Mech myself, it would depend on the situation. Working together in a group and need good communication? Probably nothing so I could focus better. If it was some type of assault mission where the goal was simply to destroy everything, then it would be some heavy electronica mixed with metal.

As for the question, as I responded to the facebook question, I prefer Beethoven or Wagner. Beethoven's 5th has always been a favorite, kind of like the heavy metal of classical music.
If I were a Mechwarrior, I'm thinking I'd still have to go with classical music. I'm thinking something like Mozart's string qunitets. They have a great mix of relaxing and high tempo, turbulent passages and I really like the sound of string instruments... Figure if I was in a situation, it would keep me relaxed yet focused for the task at hand.
