What kind of music would you listen to when playing MWT? Also, if YOU were a MechWarrior, what music would you have cranked to 11 in your cockpit during a battle?

Metallica, Disturbed, Halestorm are usually on my playlist when I play games... But if I was in a battle I wouldn't have any music on, I'm the tactical player who would prefer to know his surroundings, status of equipment and his commander properly. Music would get you killed :P

depends on what is going on in the game. Is my victor about to make a running charge in the middle of the fray and lay the smack down on an entire lance? Stan Bush's "The touch."

is my Catapult raining hot stabbity screaming missile death from behind cover? Peter Gabriel Red Rain.

is a light lance making cutting attacks against a much heavier group? Stone Cold Crazy covered by Metallica

is a lance of nothing but stalkers making a slow and menacing advance on some poor sap? NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN!

Unfortunatley, most of the time it will be muted due to being at work or trying to not disturb the wife while she watches TV...

When I *do* get to take it off mute, though, I prefer music with no lyrics (too distracting). Something driving and harsh would convey the proper mood. When you posted a similar question on Facebook a while ago I responded with Dvorak's "Mars". Still seems like an appropriate musical selection.

As for what to listen to if I were *actually* in a mech? I'm with Battalia, I would not risk drowning out things like that Lyran Scout Lance trying to sneak up behind me...

Let's see, a little Iron Maiden, probably some Styx or Skynyrd. And, on jungle maps, I'll probably go with some vietnam-movie-soundtrack.

Two very different types of music. As a player, probably some classical: Mahler, Stravinsky or Mozart. Maybe some 80's or 90's stuff, cuz I'm old. If I was getting ready to rumble for real? Metalica, Megadeth or other fighting music. Music effects mood, so if you're going into combat, you want fighting music. If I'm playing a game, I want something to perk up my brain.

As a 'MechWarrior, it depends on my ride. If I'm driving a bug, definitely some hardcore/d&b or some Anamanaguchi/other quickfire chiptunes to get me in that high-speed 7/11+ mood. If I'm in a Clint, surf music. Anything 4/6, well, then we switch over to appropriately heavy and epic metal. =) Of course, as has been mentioned, once contact with the enemy has been made, all BGM gets switched off.

I've been on a Hives kick lately so in actuality, when I've been playing MWT, it's been Hives in the background. If I had to pick an ideal soundtrack, though, that'd take me a little while. :)

The "classic me" reaches for Scandanavian thrash. The "current me" wants the pounding beats and aggression of the euro-industrial scene.

Though I must say, ever since spending hundreds of hours in the Fallout world, there's something very attractive about playing in a devolved technological setting like Battletech while listening to something akin to Galaxy News Radio.

I expect to sing Christmas carols out loud while playing MWT. Like I am right now, except without my coworkers staring at me, because I'll be at home.

While deciding how i would outfit my lance probably some BSBD or Egadz, something easy that let's me dreamily imagine what i might be come up against and plan accordingly.

When in combat it would be something aggresive. Some industrial metal type shiz.

Also Peter Gabriel! You can never go wrong with Peter Gabriel! XD

As JPArbiter said, it'd depend on situation. A few classic all-rounders would be "Orion" by Metallica, "Prison Song" by SoaD, "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel, "Princes of the Universe" by Queen, "Rusty Cage" by Sound Garden, "Easy Lover" by Phil Collins and "Music" by John Miles, although if listening to John Miles in the cockpit, I'd have to force myself to only engage anything while the awesome bits are playing, and then get out of range so that nothing dramatic could happen during the quiet bits.

More specifically, I'd have "Slither" by Velvet Revolver playing while piloting a mech loaded with crit-seeking weapons, since the tempo requires a hail of bullets, casings falling 30 feet onto the ground below. If I'm a merc, I'd roll out the Aloe Blacc "I Need A Dollar", because I rather like the image of that booming out while my opponents... share their dollars, as it were.

Piloting something ridiculously huge and powerful, I'd play some "Funky Cold Medina" Tone Loc, to let them know how relaxed I am. Either that, or Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby Mcferrin. Hard to argue with either of those :D

If piloting a locust or something crazy fast, I'd play "Slow Ride". Niiiiice.

Finally, "Greatest Dancer" or "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" by Sister Sledge and Indeep respectively, jumping about and laying down some melee.

Of course, all fo it gets blasted out of some massive speakers. 4 crit slots in the centre torso big. Major sound system to broadcast my style.
Woot! Finally got my sig working. My window has to scroll sideways to reveal the link to it, so I had never seen it before. Nice. Wait.. crap. Now I've filled it with -this-.

In terms of playing MWT, I'll probably have the music down and the TV on. My default online turn-based gaming setup is me on the couch, laptop on the coffee table, and the TV tuned to my normal viewing schedule.

As a MechWarrior, I'd have my 'mix tape' of goodies and classics such as:

All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
Paint it Black - The Rolling Stones
California Dreamin - Mamas & The Papas
Ride of the Valkyries - Wagner
Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven
Violin Concertos of Tchaikovsky, Mozart, and Brahm
Ave Maria - Schubert

'Rejoice, for your annihilation will be to the metronomic paces of my Fafnir in 4/4 time.'

*****

Edited to include my favorite guilty pleasure, the Foo Fighters (and their earlier works).

Nothing. I would want to hear what my lancemates had to tell me and any other critical information coming over the comm.

I don't listen to music while I play games and generally turn off any in game music.

I think I might be going against the crowd, but I'd prefer some light background music that isn't obtrusive. While metal might be the best choice for a MechWarrior game where you're piloting an individual 'Mech, for a game like MechWarrior Tactics it seems more fitting for something more casual; something maybe like elevator music with a slight techno rock twist.

You're taking on the role of a commander ordering his troops on the field; it would be weird to have heavy metal music blaring in the background.

More importantly though, I'd definitely want a lot of environmental sounds and ambiance -- the world should feel alive. That's much more crucial than any specific type of background music.

However, if I was piloting a 'Mech myself, it would depend on the situation. Working together in a group and need good communication? Probably nothing so I could focus better. If it was some type of assault mission where the goal was simply to destroy everything, then it would be some heavy electronica mixed with metal.

Dude, you freakin scare me at how eerily similar my life is to yours. I haven't played a game with the sound on for over a year, though it's more due to my baby than my wife.

As for the question, as I responded to the facebook question, I prefer Beethoven or Wagner. Beethoven's 5th has always been a favorite, kind of like the heavy metal of classical music.

If I were a Mechwarrior, I'm thinking I'd still have to go with classical music. I'm thinking something like Mozart's string qunitets. They have a great mix of relaxing and high tempo, turbulent passages and I really like the sound of string instruments... Figure if I was in a situation, it would keep me relaxed yet focused for the task at hand.
